I think everyone has heard of social networking by now…MySpace, (Google)OpenSocial, Facebook, Twitter. These are some common and popular social networks. They allow people to stay in touch and communicate online. Well, Genetree has added a different twist to their social network community, a different twist that Fresh Geeks have never heard of until now…
Register and Submit to a DNA Test?
Launched in Late October 2007 Genetree beta is a social network that, in addition to keeping in contact with those you know and making new online friends, allows you to submit your DNA and compare it with other registered users. Their tool, called the DNAvigator, helps you compare and contrast your DNA to others with a claim that ” you could discover your ancient origins and find other people that are related that you never even knew existed. ”
Registration on the site is free. You are not required to submit your DNA to use their other services. However, if you would like to you may submit your test or purchase a DNA kit from them (kits range from $99.00-$149.99). DNA aside, you can upload photos, videos, etc. and do all other ‘normal’ social networking stuff.
So, What Do You Think?
This is definitely a different network concept. I find it a little weird, if not creepy. Submitting my DNA results for all to see is kind of on the same level as posting my social security number on a bulletin…at least that’s how I feel. Anyway, most people don’t like to pay for services so I don’t expect Genetree ever to be as popular as MySpace. But perhaps these two services are somewhat similar, but different enough to be in their own class (meaning maybe they shouldn’t be compared to each other).
I’m thinking Genetree will possibly spark the most interest in those who were adopted and looking for biological family, and those fascinated with genealogy. So what do you think? Can Genetree become a hit?

I’m with you, this is a bit creepy. Actually it’s really creepy! I guess I can see that people would like to find relatives, but unless everyone submits DNA, it doesn’t seem like the service will help that much.
