Does posting every day matter? That is one very common blogger question that has been on my mind lately. How consistent should postings be?
It can be a bit puzzling if we come at it from the blog-writer perspective, so maybe turning the tables and seeing through the audience viewpoint will help. Taking that into consideration, and also assuming you have a group of loyal readers, I came up with the…

I’ve read articles where posts were likened to meals and the quality of it. No, I’m not gonna pimp the ‘content is king’ speech. This is something that is common knowledge to all serious bloggers. Instead, I want to bring out another facet of likening posts to food…
Posts can be likened to portions of food. If you eat a small snack, your stomach will still have room for more intake. However if you’ve just had a six-course meal, you are left abundantly full; your body will need time to digest it.
So when tackling the question of post consistency, we should consider what type of meal we would liken our previous post to (as well as the one to come). To elaborate more on the matter, let’s compare and contrast 3 well- known blogs and why the amount of posts they make daily [or not] works for them.
Gizmodo dishes out an average of 15-30 posts per day. The thought of creating that many posts, and still actually giving a hoot about quality, can be very overwhelming from the writer’s perspective, but it isn’t from the audience viewpoint.
The Giz’s daily roundup is like a grab-bag of bite-sized candy, the kind they pass out on Halloween. You dump the contents of the bag out and take your pick from the array of different candies.
These posts are interesting and informative, but you don’t feel a need to read each and every one. Just scan the pictures of shiny gadgets, and pick the ones with the best eyecandy. After you’re done with the tasty treats you’re left tickled and content for the time being, yet you might feel the need for a sugar-rush in the days to come…and that’s why the gizmo zombies keep going back for more.
Problogger’s posts are like chicken soup for the blogger’s soul. One post equals a hearty bowl of chicken soup. Need easily understood blogging advice? Feeling a little discouraged? Well, Problogger serves up on average 1-3 posts daily…a whole day’s worth of meals. These posts leave you feeling content and well-advised, and succeeds in whetting your appetite for the day to come.
DoshDosh averages 1 article every 1-3 days. Three days may seem like an eternity to some, but I believe this is a great consistency rate for these type of articles.
Maki’s posts are like a 6-course meal overflowing with important points and quality advice. Sometimes the topic is so heavy with points and issues that reader’s may have to make like a cow and ruminate on it for a day or so.
Also, these topics are up for debate by readers. The post comments section is more like a conversation section where those that are ruminating congregate to discuss techniques and issues being served up. The ‘controvery’ subsides in a day or so, and that leaves readers ready for another dose of DoshDosh.
When pondering over what is a good posting rate, it’s good to ask yourself what kind of meal you intend on serving up. You don’t want to starve your audience or, in contrast, stuff them to their limit.
Of course this is just one factor out of many to consider, but I believe that it is one of the more important ones.

Fascinating analogy here. I try to post every day even though its hard to come up with new stuff everyday and as a result sometimes posts are published before they are really ready.
Good Advice.Quality over quantity
Excellent points j.blu.
This is very timely for me as well as I’m trying to find the right frequency for my posts. It seems I’ve naturally settled on every other day so far. I may need to increase my frequency a bit though as my posts are more like a six inch sub. Sloppy and enough to tide you over for a bit.
Thanks for sharing your insight on this!
@Bruce
Yeah, it’s hard to keep the creative juices running in my head all the time also. I’m hoping in time, it’ll get easier.
@JMorris
Six inch sub…funny, I just had a 6″ sub from Subway for dinner tonight :)\
Thank you both for your thoughts
Very well done. I try to post something every couple of days if I can, but sometimes the day just passes me by. Life just doesn’t stop to allow me to do everything that I want.
But, you know what, that’s okay. I refuse to sacrifice quality (at least what I think are quality posts) for quantity. If it’s not worth writing, then it shouldn’t be posted. If that made any sense?
I agree with your theory of blog. In blogging one must always have balance of the ingredients you mentioned.Because those where the essence of real blogging.
A healthy blog for me is a balance. It should have substance. At the same time, should have form. Both are needed and shouldnt be sacrificed.

Hi, first timer here, nice blog!
The poster above, “Idetroce” is a spammer - I’ve seen that post everywhere the past few days and gotten it myself - I’d delete it if I was you.
About to blog or not everyday from a reader’s perspective - I find it a chore sometimes when everyone posts everyday. It can be hard to keep up at times so when folks don’t post for a day or few days, sometimes I breathe a sigh of relief.
That’s just my two cents and since I’m in a blogging funk due to illness, I really should go and close my eyes since it gets hard to see to either read or comment on all the blogs. I just thought that some might find thia opinion a bit different and let folks know it’s okay to take your time. ( I wrote an article or two about “blogging without obligation” and there’s a banner link on my blog that leads to the original article about it worth checking out)
Thanks for being here and for being so considerate as to consider the reader(s).
Peace, love and understanding to all.

I somewhat agree with you. If there are a lot of blogs that you follow, than yes, it can definitely be viewed as a chore. Some people strive for blogging to become a line of work, so that’s the motivator for them to keep on posting.
I just visited your website, and I’ll be coming back to have a better look around. Hang in there, and you are in my prayers. Thanks for your thoughts.
