Feelin’ the Rush of StumbleUpon

It’s a sunny day with tradewinds of 5-10mph. There’s a nice 1-3 ft. swell and you’ve already paddled out into the water. The ripples start making its way toward you and you begin to line yourself up for the catch. Thrusting your hands into the water, you paddle as fast as you can. Leaning forward with your chest raised, you start to feel the wave thrusting you and your board forward. It’s time to stop paddling and pounce up. As you begin your descent down the trough of the wave, you feel a surge of adrenaline pumping through your body. This motivates you and your surfing buddies to celebrate with a loud “Cheeeeeeeeeee-Whooo!”

An Online Equivalence

A feeling similar to catching a wave can be felt when you feel like something was accomplished with your blog. I’ve recently just experienced my first bigger surge of traffic from StumbleUpon. My article Theory of Healthy Blog Portions was stumbled by a well-known blogger and within three and a half hours of posting it, I recieved three times the amount of traffic I normally get in a day. I didn’t really have to paddle to catch this wave, I received a push from a nice guy. Here are the stats for those three and a half hours:

This is small fries for some, but a nice break for me nonetheless. I was stoked.

What Goes Up…

Whenever we manage to catch a wave it’s nice to enjoy it. But now it’s time to paddle back out and get the creative juices running to come up with another way to catch another ‘wave’ in whatever form it may be. So, has anyone else caught one lately?

Hi, I too have gotten some good traffic from Stumbleupon. Yet it seems to happen by accident not by my preferred method of controlled design.

Also I just posted some sunrise photos similar to your photo.

      Cheers,

I often get traffic surges from SU. I’d be interested to see how big your last one was :)

Every now and then I get a big surge from SU without doing anything for it. I wonder if there is a way to sustain the traffic though.

SU isn’t a good source to look for targeted traffic. However, if your posts are interesting to readers, there are a few visitors referred by SU that will stick around (in my experience anyway). I’m not counting on SU as a major source for traffic, but it’s nice to have a few hundred more hits than usual every now and then.
