Portable Media Players: 3 New iPod Video Alternatives

9 November 07

Are you in the market to buy an mp3 player or portable media player? Perhaps you’re an Apple iPod antifan or maybe you’re just trying to broaden your buying options. For those of you looking for an iPod Touch or an alternative to it, I posted an article earlier about the Archos 605 wifi vs the iPod Touch.

Here are 3 new iPod Video alternatives that are worthy of consideration. I should note that the only things stopping me from comparing these portable media players (PMPs) to the iPod Touch is the lack of touchscreen controls (with the Samsung P2 as an exception) and wi-fi capabilities.

iRiver Clix GEN2

The iRiver Clix GEN 2 is a flash based memory portable media player available in 2GB, 4GB ($190), and 8GB. What sets the 2nd generation Clix apart from the rest is it boasts a 2.2. inch screen with AMOLED (active-matrix OLED) technology - the world’s highest quality display available.

Other features include Hi-fi audio with SRS WOW voice enhancement and EQ settings, great battery life (24 hours for music and 5 hours for video), PlaysForSure, sleek and slim design, built-in FM tuner, and voice recording. Another thing to add to the bells and whistles is it comes standard with four flash games.

The screen on the Clix GEN2 is a bit small but whatever it lacks in size, it definitely makes up for it in quality.

Creative ZEN Vision W

>

The Creative ZEN Vision W is an HDD based portable media player with versions of 30GB and 60GB ($273). The W stands for widescreen, which is a big 4.3 inches on the Vision W.

Some features include TV out for movies and photo slideshow, FM radio, organizer, voice recorder, compatability with Zencast and PlaysForSure, uilt in compact flash/microdrive slot for photo backup and transfer, and a decent battery life (13 hours of music or 4.5 hours of movies).

This PMP is a bit bulky and can be a bit of a turn off for those seeking a pocketable device. I like TV connect option…it aims the Zen Vision W more towards those that want video portability.

Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 is available in colors black and maroon with a flash based memory of either 4GB($200) or 8GB($250). Features include digital FM radio, built-in Bluetooth 2.0: compatible with Bluetooth headphones and speakers for wireless stereo playback, a 3 inch widescreen LCD with touchscreen controls, recorder, text viewer, alarm clock, world clock, and calendar.

This is my favorite out of the three listed here mainly because of its trendy looks and great graphics.

Weighing in at a mere 3 oz. and less than half an inch thick, it makes me forget about the iPod Nano and Classic, and almost makes me forget about the iPod Touch…almost, but not quite.

I like the Bluetooth capabilities, and now all Samsung has to do is slap some Wi-Fi capability on it an it would be a worthy opponent of Apple’s iPod Touch.

The Wrap

Well, there you have it…some other gadgets to ponder on when making your decision on what mp3 player or portable media player to buy.
