Networking with other bloggers has always been one of the “obvious” rules of blogging. Commenting on other blogs in your niche, participating in blog carnivals and blogging forums are just easy ways to get the word out about your site.
But what’s even better, is face to face meetings. Blogger meet-ups, and blogging conferences offer ways of networking that a simple comment on a blog couldn’t even begin to compare to.
If you’re just starting out with blogging and trying to get a little exposure, try going to a local blogger meet-up. Chances are there are many more bloggers in your area than you think.
Check out upcoming.org, and enter your city and a search term of ‘blog’ or ‘blogger’. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
So what do you do when you’ve been at this for awhile, and want to take promoting your blog to the next level?
Look for a blogging conference. These offer no end of opportunities to network, and pick up all kinds of new information on blogging itself from some of the biggest names in the blogosphere.
This February I’m going to be attending NorthernVoice, a conference held in Vancouver, BC. The fact that I’m about 45 minutes from the conference site makes this the obvious choice, but there are other conferences held throughout the year, such as WordCamp for the WordPress community, and the now-defunct BloggerCon.
Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be a site that provides a calendar of upcoming blogging conferences.
What I’d like to see from the conferences themselves is a page on their site listing the URLs of all of those who attended the conference, as a way of saying, “Thanks for attending”.
Regardless, getting out and meeting other bloggers has to be considered one of the very best methods for promoting your blog and getting it the exposure that it needs to push it over the top.

It’s nice that you live not too far away from a conference as it is a more convenient situation for you. Looks like it’s going to be an interesting event.
I do agree that in order to promote your blogs you must do all the necessary promotions. I think meeting other bloggers could gain you permanent readers and friends. Conference can also help you in many ways like interacting with fellow blogger so you can improved your blogs and might find useful tips from them.
I never knew that these type of events existed. I’ll have to have a look at this.
@referate
Thanks for your thoughts! It is a lot more personal when you meet with someone face-to-face, and I believe it makes for better business relationships because we tend to trust more what we see.
@JBlu: Yes, I’m really looking forward to it. It’s the first year I’ll be going.
@Refrate: you’re absolutely right. If nothing else, meeting local bloggers gives you a person to bounce ideas off of.
@Mike: an excellent idea. Regardless of where you are, I’m willing to bet that there’s more bloggers in your area than you think.
Is commenting on other blogs NOT in your niche an effective marketing tool? Could it possiblly give you some exposure to a new circle of people? Just wondering? Appreciate your thoughts.
@T. Dorsey
Yes, commenting on other blogs NOT in your niche can be another good addition to your marketing strategy. It will give you more exposure, but it’s up to you as the marketer to sway your audience into believing that you have something relevant to offer them.
Ditto with Mike #3.
Thanks for the posts. That’s something to think about. Maybe I could bring that ideas here.
Greetings and lotta loves from Malaysia.
Opinion of one blogger is important to another.Its really great to know more bloggers. They can tell you what your good points are and the things needing improvement
I do agree with meeting up with some blogger in such way we can have good working relationship with people and our readers as they will tend to visit our blogs and they can be used as reference on how to improved our blog and what to do to make this blog works out. We can easily share tips and ideas without hesitation and also in such way we can gain not just readers but friends as well which might help us in a long run.
