Gulping down a Slurpee or Icee extemely fast can result in brainfreeze. Brainfreeze is a sharp and painful sensation in your head that is caused by consuming something cold very quickly.
Blogger’s Brainfreeze is a sharp and painful headache caused by excessive time spent blogging, researching, or promoting the blog-related. This can be harmful because it could potentially cause Blogger’s Burnout. So, how do you prevent the dreaded condition?
Get a notepad and pen and create a schedule. This will make you more aware of when you’re overdoing it. Many who tend to ‘overdo it’ on work fail to keep track of how much time and effort they are putting into a project because they do not have a set schedule. When your schedule becomes your routine, it will aid you in predicting a potential brainfreeze, and also aid you in taking measures to avoid it.
Yes, there is life away from the computer, and your life will continue to go on even if you turn the computer off. I’ve been guilty of staying online for hours on end too many times. Give your mind, as well as your bloodshot eyes, some time to rest and recuperate, and give your computer chair cushion time to even out the butt impression you left on it.
Now that you’ve stepped away from the computer for a bit, get out and expose yourself to sunlight. A healthy dose of sunlight can boost your immune system, lift your spirits, help correct your body’s internal clock to help you sleep better at night, and give your skin a healthy glow.
Being physically sick makes work harder, so step outside of your cubicle and go get some sunlight.
No, no…I don’t mean MySpace or StumbleUpon. I mean your offline social life with friends and people in the flesh. Networking and maintaining blogger friendships are an important aspect to blogging success. However, maintaining your offline social life is just as important. This will greatly help you to maintain a proper view of the online world. Your offline friends will be there for you even if you go bust blogging.
Working can be a stress creator, and exercise is a proven stress killer. Physical activity also eases tension, pumps you up with endorphins to get you into a better mood, and helps with blood circulation. A healthy body contributes to a healthy mentality. In turn, a healthy mentality is better suited for handling the daily hustle that blogging entails.
So, what measure do you take to combat blogger’s brainfreeze?

away from the computer?
exposure to sunlight?
social life? oh wait, EXERCISE????
OMG geek suicide!
Great tips, J. I just wish that there was more sunlight around here at this time of year. And I keep meaning to get into an exercise routine, but…
Are you serious? No blogging no computer, nothing. Ok then what are we supposed to do mmm. How about mmm got to Star Bucks with laptop talk to weird lady on table next to me and then go back to blogging yes yes this is enough social life for me. MMM maybe not talk to weird lady.
@Andy
Yup, definitely geek suicide lol
@Rod
Is ‘here’ Alaska?
@Vic
I didn’t mean turn the computer off forever. I find that a break from the computer every now and then can be beneficial. And no, I don’t recommend talking to weird lady either.
Thanks for your thoughts guys
I like number 3. Sunshine is good, though I’d rather play in the rain today…
@mcangeli
There’s been lots of downpours lately where I’m at. I should take my own advice and get some sun before it starts raining again. Thanks for your thoughts.
Rain is nice also.
@ Andy,
Geek Suicide, I love it!!
@ J,
I think you may have upset some people with this post.
@Mike
Although that wasn’t my intention, it seems that I have.
mike,

@lankapo
My vision gets blurry if I’m in front of the computer for awhile also…this only happens sometimes though. Thank you for your thoughts

@lankapo
Fresh Geeks is my blog, but no worries…people have been misunderstanding me quite often as of late.
Now that our blog is in our own bar, it’s tempting to go for the Blue Beaver Beer on tap and get ‘beerfreeze’.
My wife drags me away from the computer periodically, turns me to face the sun and puts children on my lap. without her, I would be lost like some of those above!
@Tim E.
beerfreeze…that happens to me often enough also.
You said it all! You are right. All you said are helpful to avoid stress and burnout for bloggers. Good advice, keep it on.
Good tips!
And yeah, definitely add “give yourself a weekend off every once in a while” and “reward yourself with bonuses every once in a while”. Nothing like taking a weekend off and playing with the cool toys you bought yourself for doing a job well done :).
@DotDriven
I could use a weekend off right about now. Perhaps I’ll take your advice in a couple of weeks.
lol, sadly I need to take my own advice! But when you are “hungry” and trying to make sure you can pay rent next month it makes it hard to justify being lazy. But definitely important once you start seeing some results.
@DotDriven
I agree. 10 minute breaks when you have to pay the bills will suffice. When the results start flowing, a weekend break is well justified.
I love the photo and that brain freeze feeling is the pitts as they say. As for the writers block for bloggers, I still don’t get how anyone can ever not have something to write about. I mean go to Digg.com and pick a topic, or my own site earthfrisk.com and pick one.
A blogger told me a while ago that they were bored sometimes and didn’t know what to write about. I told that person that with the internet in front of you it is impossible to get bored. Only boring people get bored. I hope I’m not offending anyone it’s just that I can’t find enough time in the day to do what I want. I go to bed every night withing I had another 4 or 5 hrs to work.
I have to admit that I don’t follow a lot of your rules, but wish I did. We all need to exercise and keep fit and staying away from your computer does wonders for you.
Can I suggest one topic that maybe can help even the most dense person get ideas for their blogs or sites? Delete this if you must, I understand, but I know one blogger who is a boring person. But he tokes up ( you know what I mean) and ideas fall out of his head at ridiculous rates. He tokes up at least once a week and just lets the juices flow. I know this isn’t the healthiest thing to suggest, but for those of you with a real freeze, this will definitely make you look at your blog and the world in a different light, complete with fresh ideas.
@Michael
That’s definitely an ‘interesting’ way to cure writer’s block. Some of the greatest rock songs were written while writers were under the influence of some sort of drug, although I do NOT recommend or promote the idea in any way.
I was actually referring to ‘brainfreeze’ as the headache one can get after doing hours of research and work without stopping to eat or take a short break. My theory is if overly exerting ourselves in physical activity can be harmful to our health, then the same applies with mental exertion.
You are right though when you say there is plenty to be inspired about in the online world. There will always be something to write about.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Getting outside is also good for blogging. There is a lot of inspiration out there with nature and people: pictures to be taken, things to be heard by strangers, animals with hidden messages. . .
Great! However, blogging about technology can be even harder, but can also be very easy if you know where to look…
